NHS Downriver Boys Volleyball Charity Tournament

Abbey Skarbinski and Kelsey Cyrbok came to me with a Independent Service Project (a requirement of second year members) asking to host a NHS Downriver Boys Volleyball Charity tournament.  Through social media they invited schools and advertised the event.  We held it on Saturday Dec 9 in the gym.

6 schools participated and each represented a different charity

  1. Trenton – National Breast Cancer Foundation
  2. Woodhaven – Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
  3. Allen Park – Cystic Fibrosis
  4. Cabrini – Social Works
  5. Wyandotte – Relentless Detroit (childhood cancer)
  6. Gabriel Richard – American Diabetes Association
Each team paid a entrance fee.  Admission was collected at the door.  A bake sale collected donations.
50 players, plus coaches, plus parents and fans attended.  I would estimate  at least 200  in attendance.  We already have schools asking to participate next year and  Abby Slate has stepped up to run the 2018 tournament.
Mr. Schlesinger and Mr. Ruetz were the referees.  Although they received some heat from coaches, they did a great job and seemed to have fun.  NHS members worked the event and donated baked goods, parents came to help chaperone, and even the West family came to help.  The little one (Natalie) ran the scoreboard.  Thank you to Mr. Stephens for a TON of support.
All proceeds will be donated to the winner’s charity.  Wyandotte won (a tough battle against Woodhaven) and the $1010 raised will be donated to Relentless Detroit on their behalf.
I am incredibly proud of Abbey and Kelsey for their leadership.  If you see them, please give them a “congrats” for their hard work.  They have set a precedent and standard to be met by current and future members.

Toy Box Drive Holiday Party

The high school’s annual Toy Box Drive Holiday Party is fast approaching and will take place next Tuesday, December 12th right after school in the cafeteria from 3 to 4 pm. A fabulous selection of cookies will be available, as well as hot chocolate; and holiday music will be performed by our Jazz Band. You never know who might join in on the karaoke, and we may get a surprise visitor from the North Pole. Only a $1 admission price or the donation of a toy is charged, and all proceeds  help make the season brighter for families in our community. Donations of games, books, and clothing are currently being accepted in the boxes outside the main office.

And, Ugly Holiday Sweater Day is also next Tuesday. Students and staff try to outdo each other by wearing their best (or, really, worst) holiday sweater for the day. The student  with the ugliest sweater at the party wins a prize!

Poetry Out Loud

On Thursday, December 7, the final round of the heated 10th grade class poetry recitation competition will take place in the Allen Park Center for the Arts.  For weeks, students have been preparing for this competition in their ELA10 classes.  Students were asked to choose a poem from the online anthology and memorize it.  They have practiced “punching up” words, and also varying their tone of voice in order to match the tone of the speaker of the poem.  This contest is based on the regulations behind “Poetry Out Loud,” a contest put forth by a joint effort from The National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation.

APHS Boys Varsity Basketball

Dear AP Friends,

Over Christmas break the APHS Boys Varsity Basketball Team will have the opportunity to play on the floor at the new Little Caesars Arena downtown on Saturday, January 6th vs. Gibraltar Carlson. This is a rematch of last years game at the Palace of Auburn Hills, which the Jags won 53-50.

The game will tip off at 11:30 am, there is a second high school game after us and then the Pistons play the Houston Rockets that evening at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $40 and that gets you into all 3 games – $5 from each ticket comes back to APHS Basketball Program. You can leave after the APHS game and come back that evening for the Pistons game if you don’t want to stick around for the 2nd high school game.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy some time downtown with the family and check out the new arena if you haven’t had the chance to get there yet. We would love to see you there… please let me know if you are interested (ticket order form attached). Thanks and as always #GoJags!!
